California Governor Gavin Newsom didn’t mince words this yesterday when he called out House Speaker Mike Johnson for peddling a dangerous and dishonest talking point. Johnson has repeatedly suggested that Democrats are trying to use ongoing budget negotiations to fund health insurance for undocumented immigrants. It’s a lie — and Newsom is right to call it what it is.

The truth is simple: Democrats are fighting to extend the Affordable Care Act’s premium tax credits, a policy that directly benefits millions of American citizens. If these tax credits are allowed to expire, 4 million Americans, and we want to emphasize that these are hardworking American citizens, will lose their health insurance, and premiums will skyrocket for countless more. This isn’t theoretical. These tax credits were originally expanded under the American Rescue Plan and extended through the Inflation Reduction Act, making coverage more affordable for working- and middle-class families.

Republicans are refusing to extend them — and then trying to change the subject by fearmongering about immigrants.

Republicans don’t want to address health care costs so that when costs go sky high, they can blame it on the “horrible” out of control Obamacare plan that the Republicans have been trying to get rid of since it went into effect.

Also why is there a public debate about whether illegal immigrants are covered by the ACA? The Democrats can easily clear this up with a 5 minute face-to-face conversation with the Republicans, preferably in front of the press. Calling each other liars is going nowhere.

Don't forget the real reason trump wanted the government shut down. So they wouldn't be forced to vote on releasing the Epstein files. I think that's what matters to trump the most. And because of that, he will be in NO hurry to open the government back up again. HE still gets paid, he doesn't care. He honestly doesn't.

The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act (PRWORA) of 1996: This law barred most non-citizens without permanent status from accessing federal healthcare and other benefit programs.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010: The ACA explicitly prohibits undocumented immigrants from enrolling in federal health coverage programs like Medicaid and from purchasing subsidized coverage through the ACA marketplaces.

Federal law establishes that undocumented immigrants are ineligible for major government-funded health coverage programs, including Medicaid, Medicare, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and subsidized plans under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

About this stupid lie that Democrats want "illegal aliens" getting all the bennies from Obamacare": Dems have a golden opportunity for clarity: Please quote the LAW that make it illegal for them to get 'free' healthcare! Quote the law and give a link to it so that everyone, even crazy uncles can read it with their own eyes

Seriously, who wrote this. The Senate is a part of Congress, not some separate entity.

Intentionally or not, you're losing the forest for the trees. Many people tend to use "Congress" to refer to the House of Representatives. Yes, it's true that Congress comprises both the House and the Senate, but really, who cares at this point? Concern yourself with things that actually matter.

Stupidity matters, especially regarding something so basic as the construction of the Federal government. Stupid people wouldn't care. Also, I'm not losing anything on the big picture by pointing out the stupidity.

Doesn't pointing out your own stupidity matter to you? We don't have a real government right now. People still have the freedom to call it whatever they want.

The only 2 exceptions I know of are for everyone: Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA): Passed in 1986, this law requires Medicare-participating hospitals to provide STABILIZING treatment for anyone in a medical emergency.

This one carries a charge or "non-assistance to person in danger" if no help is given.

Emergency Medicaid: This provides limited federal funding to reimburse hospitals for the emergency medical treatment they provide to undocumented patients, provided the patient meets other eligibility requirements like income. Emergency Medicaid does not provide general health insurance coverage.
